Djerba is the legendary beautiful home of the lotus-eaters, where Ulysses paused during the course of the Odyssey.

It is an island in Southern Tunisia connected to the mainland by a Roman causeway and its climate is perfect for year-round swimming and sunbathing

Several UK tour operators offer package holidays to Djerba. For independent travellers the best way is to get an internal flight from Tunis which takes about one hour.

There are several excellent restaurants in Djerba. Local specialities are octopus and calamari. Try the Haroun restaurant overlooking the port.

The easiest way to get around the island is by bicycle as the island is virtually flat with little traffic. Local buses and taxis are also very cheap.

There are two main isles in the Kerkennah group, these are Gharbi and Chergui - both being an ideal choice for a relaxing holiday.

The uncommercialised resorts offer white sands and palm trees, overlooking the clear blue seas to the mainland. The landscape is flat, making bicycles an ideal way of exploring the islands.
