The resort of Tabarka
in northwest Tunisia is a picturesque resort, built around a marina,
with a magnificent beach which stretches for miles.
It is a popular resort for scuba divers and
golfers, as well as being a good base for family holidays.
Tabarka has a rich cultural history. Yellow
marble and lions were shipped out from here to the rest of the
Roman empire.
A Genoese fort is clearly
visible from most points in Tabarka and remains of the Ottoman
forts can be found in the hills around Tabarka.
Tabarka is not a large resort and best explored on foot. Taxis
can be used from the hotels strip to the resort centre.
There is also a noddy
train running from the tourist area to the resort. If you wish
to travel further afield, the bus or a 'louage' (shared taxi)
is a good option.
Due to its central location, fish is a
popular dish in this area of the country and features on the menu
of the cheapest and most expensive of restaurants.
