Don't Miss in Tozeur

A trip into the desert to visit the film locations of Star Wars and the English Patient.
A camel trek over the majestic sand dunes of the Sahara desert.
A trip on the Red Lizard train through the mountain gorges.
A trip across the shimmering dry salt lake, Chott el Djerid where, on a sunny day mirages are a common occurrence.
A hot-air balloon ride over the Sahara.

Tozeur is an extremely interesting town with a huge palmery, an old town and an excellent museum. It is also an ideal base for exploring the surrounding desert region.

The beautiful desert landscape around Tozeur has gained prominence in filmmaking and has provided the backdrop for many scenes from Star Wars and the English Patient.

Without doubt, a stay in Tozeur makes a real Saharan adventure possible.

The easiest way to explore the town of Tozeur is on foot, but for excursions into the desert the best mode of transport is four-wheel drive and should always be accompanied by a guide.

600km south of Tunis is the town of Douz, which plays host to the International Sahara festival.

Over the festival weekend, ususally towards the end of the year, Douz draws locals and tourists alike for this exciting cultural event, with traditional music, dance and races from 24 different countries.

It is a cultural, historical and ethnic festival that includes everything from dancing to dog racing - it's well worth a visit. Every Thursday there is also a general market and livestock in a square just off the main square.
